Frequently asked questions.

What services does Halal Hands provide to the community?

For 14 years we’ve focused on two core missions:

Providing food and emergency relief. We distribute non-perishable halal groceries, hygiene products, and seasonal meat packs (e.g., Eid/Qurbani portions) to neighbours facing food insecurity.

Raising awareness about food security. Through outreach events, school talks, and faith-based partnerships we educate the public on the roots of hunger and how collective action can end it.

Alongside our regular pantry days, we run special drives (winter-wear, school-supply kits, Ramadan food hampers) and share surplus donations with smaller pop-up pantries across Halton Region.

Who is eligible to receive support, and how do I apply?

Anyone living in Milton, Oakville, or nearby communities who is experiencing financial hardship or food insecurity can access our services.

There is no religious requirement. To register, bring a piece of photo ID and a recent proof of address for each adult in your household on your first visit; children’s ID (health card or birth certificate) lets us tailor packages. After you’re on the system, simply book a pickup slot online or call our help-line before pantry days. Emergency walk-ins are welcome if you cannot pre-register.

Which food or household items can I donate, and what items are not accepted?

We detail this in our blog post but here's a quick rundown.

We gratefully accept (new/unopened, in-date):

Breakfast Items:
breakfast spreads, cereal, oatmeal, etc.
Canned Foods: beans, tuna, soup, vegetables, etc.

Children’s Items: baby formula, diapers, wipes, etc.

Condiments & Spices, Drinks, Dry Foods, Home Supplies, Men’s & Women’s Items.

We cannot accept:
Alcohol; Clothes (unless new); Electronics; Equipment; Fresh Foods; Furniture; Haram Foods; Meat (except halal during Eid Al-Adha, 2-3lb bags, with hygiene rules); Opened Foods; Supplies (unless new & useful).

How can I volunteer, and what kinds of roles are available?

Complete the short volunteer form on our website; you’ll receive a welcome email with upcoming shifts. Roles include:

Warehouse & packing – sorting donations and assembling food hampers.

Distribution – greeting clients, carrying boxes to vehicles, local deliveries.

Advocacy & outreach – staffing info booths, community presentations.

Skills-based support – graphic design, social-media content, grant writing, data entry.

Whether you give an afternoon a month or a few hours each week, “your time is one of the greatest gifts you can give.”

What is the Halal Food Supplement Project and how does it work in Milton and Oakville?

The Halal Food Supplement Project (Jan 1 – Dec 31) operates in Milton and Oakville, supplying weekly donations of halal food to local food banks so all communities have access to food they can eat. We bulk-purchase and collect culturally appropriate staples (rice, lentils, halal-certified proteins) and deliver them every Friday to partnering agencies. This ensures Muslim clients—and others who prefer halal—never have to choose between faith and nutrition.

How are my monetary donations used, and will I receive a tax receipt?

Every dollar fuels our operations: purchasing bulk halal staples, renting refrigerated trucks for meat drives, and keeping the lights on in our warehouse. Administrative overhead is kept under 10 %, and we publish audited financials annually for transparency. Halal Hands is a registered Canadian charity; every donation made through our site automatically generates an electronic tax receipt, and paper receipts are available on request. Donations can be made one-time or monthly through our secure portal or by e-transfer.
